About the artist

THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT were a four-piece rock band: Yusuke Chiba on vocals and guitar, Futoshi Abe on guitar, Koji Ueno on bass and Kazuyuki Kuhara on drums[1]. The band grew out of a student band club at Meiji Gakuin University, with Chiba at its center[1][2]. Its formation is usually dated to 1988[1], although the official site gives 1991 and Kuhara says it was really 1990[2]. Kuhara himself joined in November 1990: he saw the band play at a campus festival, thought they were great but that he could drum better, and more or less forced his way in[2].

After a spell on the independent scene, they made their major-label debut in February 1996 with the single "Sekai no Owari" ("the end of the world")[1]. At FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL '98, held on August 2, 1998, at Tokyo Bayside Square, they stopped "G.W.D" partway through to keep people at the front from being crushed[3]. At Fuji Rock in 2000 they headlined the night after BLANKEY JET CITY, the two bands becoming the festival's first Japanese headliners[3][4].

Why this was the last show

On July 2, 2003, a month after releasing the album SABRINA NO HEAVEN, THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT announced an eight-city tour of Japan for the autumn. It was called LAST HEAVEN TOUR, and it was to end at Makuhari Messe on October 11[5].

At the end of August the band broke the news in its fan club bulletin. According to Tower Records' news site, a letter addressed to everyone who loved the band said that the Makuhari show would be their last concert and that "Erekutorikku Sākasu" ("electric circus"), a single due out the same day, would be their last single; a formal announcement on the official website and elsewhere was expected on September 1[6]. BARKS called it a sudden declaration that took fans by surprise[7], and Universal Music, announcing the 2025 Blu-ray, recalled that it came at the height of the band's popularity[8]. Neither of the 2003 reports gives a reason for the split[6][7].

Just after the announcement, NHK's program Top Runner aired an episode with all four members: a long interview and a studio performance[9]. The tour grew to 13 shows: twelve from Sapporo on September 12 to Sendai on October 4, then Makuhari[10][11]. Natalie's 2025 feature and a 2023 article in THE FIRST TIMES both date the breakup itself to the Makuhari concert[1][12].

What is known about the day

The October 11 concert was titled BURNING MOTORS GO LAST HEAVEN[8][13]. It was held in Makuhari Messe's International Exhibition Hall[14], billed in the tour announcement as "Makuhari Messe Exhibition Hall"[5]. The crowd was all standing[8]; reports put it at about 37,000[7][8] or at 40,000[12].

BARKS ran its report three days later. It says 5,000 lockers had been set up and tickets were exchanged for wristbands. The stage had no decoration at all, just the minimum of equipment the four needed to play and large screens at the sides and back. The members walked on to the theme from The Godfather and opened with "Doroppu" ("drop"); at the front, people were crushed together and kept diving[7].

According to the set list printed with the report, the main set ran to 20 songs, including the last single, "Erekutorikku Sākasu," and ended with "Ririi" ("Lily"). The encore was "GT400," "Riborubā Jankīzu" ("revolver junkies"), "Jenī" ("Jenny") and, finally, the debut single "Sekai no Owari"[7]. The 2003 DVD and the 2025 Blu-ray hold the same 24 songs in the same order[11][8].

At the end, BARKS reports, Chiba left the stage saying, "Thank you rockers, I love you baby"[7]. The writer found nothing sentimental in the show; only when Abe, who rarely spoke on stage, said thank you during the encore, and the crowd roared back, did it begin to feel like the end[7].

What the show left behind

The video came out on December 3, 2003, as the DVD BURNING MOTORS GO LAST HEAVEN[11][15]. A live CD released the same day, LAST HEAVEN'S BOOTLEG, drew on the tour's other twelve shows[11][10].

Chiba had already launched a second band, ROSSO, in 2001[16][17], and in September 2005 he formed The Birthday with Kuhara[18]. Ueno, then playing in Radio Caroline, joined the HIATUS, the band formed around Takeshi Hosomi, on bass in 2009[19]. Futoshi Abe, whose machine-gun guitar cutting, in Natalie's words, sent rock fans wild[20], died on July 22, 2009, at the age of 42[21].

That December 19, THEE MOVIE -LAST HEAVEN 031011-, a documentary made as part of a memorial project for Abe[22], opened in cinemas. Directed by Syuichi Banba, it follows the final concert and its backstage[23][14][24]. For October 11, 2023, twenty years on, an all-standing screening was planned at Cinemart Shinjuku in Tokyo[14], and an "odessa EDITION," with the film's sound re-optimized for each cinema, was set to open on October 11, 2024, with one screening at Theatre Shinjuku where the audience could stand and cheer[25].

Yusuke Chiba died on November 26, 2023, at the age of 55[16][12]. Memorial screenings of the film were set to begin on December 22[12], and the Top Runner episode was scheduled for a rerun[9].

On October 11, 2025, exactly 22 years after the concert, the show came out on Blu-ray for the first time, with an opening film not on the 2003 DVD: a standard edition at 6,600 yen and a limited box at 23,100 yen that adds the live recording on four vinyl LPs. It was part of THEE 30TH, a project leading up to the 30th anniversary of the band's debut in February 2026[8]. That year Natalie introduced THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT and BLANKEY JET CITY as bands still winning new listeners more than 20 years after their breakups[1], and Masafumi Gotoh of ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION said the band had proved that rock sung in Japanese could hold its own on Fuji Rock's GREEN STAGE[26].

The band's first single was the last song of its last night.

Context for readers

The era. A 2025 TV special placed THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT and BLANKEY JET CITY in an era shaped by Japan's band boom and by the arrival of big rock festivals[27]. Fuji Rock was held at Tokyo Bayside Square in 1998 and at Naeba Ski Resort in 2000, when the two bands became its first Japanese headliners[3].

Tour and finale. The tour was named LAST HEAVEN TOUR in July 2003, before the breakup was public[5]; the closing concert had a title of its own, BURNING MOTORS GO LAST HEAVEN, which the DVD and Blu-ray also carry[11][8].

Song titles. Many of the band's song titles are English words written in katakana, the Japanese script for foreign words, and that is how they appear on the official releases[8]. We give them in romanized form with the meaning in parentheses.

Names. The members' names are written in katakana in Japanese (チバユウスケ, アベフトシ, ウエノコウジ, クハラカズユキ)[1]. We give them in Western order, romanized as in JFDB, the Japanese film database run by the Japan Foundation and UNIJAPAN[24].
