One Direction's last concert before their hiatus: Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, October 31, 2015
In August 2015, One Direction said they would take a break the following year. On October 31, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson played the final night of the On the Road Again Tour at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield in England. It was the band's last concert before the hiatus, seven months after Zayn Malik's departure.

About the artist
One Direction began on the British TV talent show The X Factor. In 2010, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, all contestants on the show, were spotted by judge Simon Cowell and formed as a group on July 23[1]; they finished third in the December final[2]. Their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” entered the UK chart at No. 1 in September 2011[3], and their first album, Up All Night, made them the first British group to debut at No. 1 on the US albums chart with a debut record[1]. When Four topped the Billboard 200 in December 2014, they became the first group whose first four albums had all debuted at No. 1[4]. They had played their first concerts in Japan in November 2013[5].
Why this was the last show
The On the Road Again Tour, a world tour behind the 2014 album Four, opened in Sydney on February 7, 2015; its schedule also included five shows in Osaka and Saitama, Japan, from February 24 to March 1[6][7]. In March, Zayn Malik left the band, which announced his departure on March 25[8]. Zayn's last concert with One Direction was in Hong Kong on March 18, 2015[6][9][10]. The other four carried on, and “Drag Me Down,” their first single without him, went to No. 1 in the UK that August[11].
On August 23, the tabloid The Sun reported that the band would split the following March. Citing the report, NME and ITV News said the Sheffield shows at the end of October were likely to be the last before the break[12][13]. The next day Niall Horan answered on Twitter: they were not splitting up, he wrote, but would take “a well-earned break” at some point the next year. Louis Tomlinson followed with “It's just a break”[11][14]. On September 22 the band announced a fifth album, Made in the A.M., for November 13; it had released an album every November since 2011, in time for Christmas[15].
On the day of the final show, AFP reported that Tomlinson had told ITV, “We fully intend to come back.” The band had met and decided they wanted a break, he said; the last couple of years had been intense, they needed time with their families, and a break was the healthiest option for everyone. Horan said that after nearly 1,000 shows it would feel strange not to perform for more than a year, and that the last gig would be emotional[16].
Sony Music Japan, the band's label there, says the group went on hiatus at the end of 2015 so that each member could focus on solo work[1]. Some outlets called it a split; the members called it a break. We file it under hiatus.
What is known about the day
The venue, then the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield and now Utilita Arena Sheffield, was built for the World Student Games and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on May 30, 1991[17]. It had carried the name of Motorpoint, a car retailer, since 2010 under a five-year deal that was due to end with 2015[18][19]. It became the FlyDSA Arena in 2017[20][19] and took its current name in 2021[21].
Two Sheffield nights, October 29 and 30, were announced in November 2014 to close the band's UK and Ireland arena dates; a third, on the 31st, made it three[22][23]. Tickets, priced from £43.45 to £71.50, went on sale in December 2014; at the promoter's request, none were sold in person at the arena[22]. All three nights sold out[24]. The local paper, The Star, noted that the shows brought the Doncaster-born Tomlinson back to South Yorkshire[22]. Saturday the 31st closed a tour of more than 80 shows in 20 countries[25], and The Star later wrote that fans had come from all over the world[26].
We have found no press report of the night's songs. According to the fan-edited setlist.fm, the band opened with “Clouds” from Four[27], played 22 songs in the main set, including “Perfect,” a single released two weeks earlier[23], and came back for an encore of “Act My Age,” their 2011 debut “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Drag Me Down”[28].
PopCrush reported that the four hugged and congratulated one another on stage while fans filmed the moment, and #ProudofOneDirection began trending worldwide[29]. Afterwards Tomlinson posted a video thanking every fan who had come to see them on tour, Horan tweeted that the night had been incredible, and Styles wrote, “You've been our everything out there, and we love you”[25].
What the show left behind
Made in the A.M. came out worldwide two weeks later, on November 13[30]. The band's first album as a four-piece gave them a fourth UK No. 1 and was, at that point, the fastest-selling album of the year in Britain; with 93,189 chart sales in its first week, it finished just ahead of Justin Bieber's Purpose[31]. In Japan it came out the same day with bonus tracks, among them a remix of “Night Changes”[30].
Sheffield was their last concert[26]; the rest of the year was television. In December they returned to The X Factor, where they had first come together, and sang “History” in front of a montage of their years as a band[32]. On December 31 they headlined the Billboard Hollywood Party in Los Angeles for ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve[33][34], which Scripps News billed as their final performance before the hiatus[35].
Solo careers followed. Horan released his first solo single, “This Town,” on September 29, 2016[36]; Tomlinson put out “Just Hold On” with Steve Aoki in 2016, and Payne released “Strip That Down” in 2017[37]. Styles's “Sign of the Times” (2017) went to No. 1 in the UK[38]. For the band's 10th anniversary in July 2020, its team announced a website tracing the story up to the start of the hiatus[39]. Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31[40]. As of October 2026, no return as a group has been announced[38][36].
What began on a TV talent show in 2010 paused five years later, on a third night in Sheffield, in Tomlinson's home region of South Yorkshire.
